The police have been dragging out the preliminary stages of the public inquiry. They are now saying it will take many months for them to assess which officers need anonymity.
The Inquiry has asked them to explain why, and asked the 180 or so ‘core participants’ who were signigficantly spied on for their contribution.
This is a make-or-break issue for the inquiry. Will it allow the police to continue to wear people down and hide behind a cloak of secrecy? Or will it insist that the public is told what was done and by whom?
This hearing will hear verbal arguments from both sides. It will continue for a second day if necessary.
There will be a solidarity demonstration outside from 09:00-10:00.
