Come and hear about the history of Britain’s political secret police from one of the people who was spied upon.
Martyn Lowe has been an anarcho-pacifist and
anti-nuclear campaigner for 50 years. In the 1980s he was a member of London Greenpeace (a separate organisation to the big Greenpeace), when it was infiltrated by members of the Metropolitan Police’s Special Demonstration Squad, including Bob Lambert.
In his time infiltrating London Greenpeace, Lambert co-authored the ‘McLibel’ leaflet that led to the longest trial in English legal history, and he also had a planned child with an activist that he abandoned when his deployment ended. He was then promoted to running the SDS.
Martyn Lowe is now a core participant at the public inquiry. At Wigan Diggers Festival, he will be giving an overview of the activities of the SDS and the current public inquiry into undercover policing, as well as details of how this impacts upon him and the lives of other activists.
It will be followed with a Q&A session / discussion of how spycop activities might have impacted some of the groups and organisations taking part in the Wigan Diggers Festival.
This event will be held in the Wigan Parish Church which across the road from
the main festival site in Believe Square.
