SUMMARY:Demo at the Spycops Inquiry Hearing
DESCRIPTION:It is over seven years since the undercover policing scandal broke\, creating shock that the police could commit such abuses against social\, animal\, and environmental justice campaigners in our country. \nPublic outrage at the scandals around undercover policing led to the Public Inquiry into Undercover Policing. Three years in\, just ahead of when it was scheduled to publish its final report\, it has yet to begin. Beset by police delaying tactics\, people who have had their lives turned upside down by infiltration are still waiting for answers. We are no nearer to knowing the extent of the ongoing abuse of democracy. \nOn Wenesday 21 March the Inquiry is holding another preliminary hearing at the Royal Courts of Justice in London. Starting at 10am\, it will conclude by 4pm. It will cover the the recent applications for anonymity by 12 former spycops\, and whether the Guardian is entitled to publish more of a leaked internal Special Demonstration Squad report. \nIt is people like you\, taking a stand for your right to campaign for positive change without being abused by the state\, that will change history\, making sure these abuses come to light and are prevented from ever happening again. Without public support\, the police may get away with hiding what has happened\, and be able to continue their abuses. \nWe will be outside the Royal Courts of Justice from 9am on the Wednesday 21 March. \nCome along to the picket and stand with the core participants to support their demands that the Inquiry releases the cover names\, and opens up the files on people who have been spied upon. \nSpread the word with the Facebook event. \nFollow events on the day on Twitter. \nShare this:FacebookTwitterTumblrEmailMoreLinkedInRedditPinterestPocketPrint

SUMMARY:Preliminary Hearing of the Spycops Public Inquiry
DESCRIPTION:Sir John Mitting \nThe Chair of the Undercover Policing Inquiry\, Sir John Mitting\, has announced another preliminary hearing of the inquiry. \nIt will be concerned with the anonymity applications by twelve former members of the Special Demonstration Squad and the ‘Lambert Report’. \nTwelve Undercover Officers \nOn 5 March 2018 the Inquiry published 29 documents in connection with 12 Special Demonstration Squad anonymity applications. The documents comprise applications\, risk assessments\, impact statements and gisted medical reports. \nA table containing links to those documents can be found here. The Inquiry Chair has issued a direction alongside these documents. \nThe Lambert Report \nAfter SDS officer Mike Chitty’s deployment ended he secretly returned to the animal rights activists he had spied on to enjoy the social life and resume a relationship with a woman there. When this was discovered by his superiors\, they commissioned Bob Lambert to investigate an appraise. \nLambert’s report was completed in 1994. It is quoted in the 2013 book by Guardian journalists Rob Evans & Paul Lewis\, ‘Undercover: The True Story of Britain’s Secret Police‘.  \nA question has arisen about whether they are entitled to publish further extracts of the report. \nOn 28 February 2018 the Inquiry published a short direction concerning the Lambert Report. \nIn response to that direction\, the Inquiry received submissions from Guardian News and Media\, the Metropolitan Police Service and the Designated Lawyers. \nThe hearing will take place on Wednesday 21 March 2018 at Court 73 of the Royal Courts of Justice\, The Strand\, London WC2A 2LL. \nJoin us for a demonstration outside from 9am. \nFuture hearings are scheduled for: \n9 May 2018 – to consider anonymity applications in respect of Special Demonstration Squad officers. \n5 July 2018 – to consider anonymity applications in respect of National Public Order Intelligence Unit officers. \n12 July 2018 – to consider anonymity applications in respect of Special Demonstration Squad officers. \nShare this:FacebookTwitterTumblrEmailMoreLinkedInRedditPinterestPocketPrint
