SUMMARY:Blacklisted Workers: 10 Years & No Justice\, London
DESCRIPTION:\nIt’s ten years since the Information Commissioers Office raided an obscure company\, the Consulting Association\, and uncovered a major scandal. More than 3\,000 people were on a secret illegal construction industry blacklist. \nThose who’d organised trade unions\, complained about unpaid wages or taken action to try to get overdue wages were on the list. Many were political activists\, barred for activity outside their work. Some weren’t even construciton workers – being political associates of ‘troublemakers’ was enough. \nThe Independent Police Complaints Commission confirmed that there is information in the files that can only have come from the police. \nIt was routine for every constabulary’s Special Branch to supply the blacklist with information on political activists\, mostly anti-racists and environmentalists. This was not police officers upholding the law; this is police officers breaking the law to maximise corporate profit. \nNo police officer has been disciplined. No construction firm has faced any charges or penalites of any kind. \nThe story was definitively told by Dave Smith & Phil Chmaberlain in Blacklisted: The Full Story. \nThis meeting brings toghether key figures in the struggle for truth and justice. New\, explosive information will be revealed at it. \n5pm Wed 6th March 2019 \nCommittee Room 10 \nHouses of Parliament\, Westminster \nConfirmed speakers (so far): \nJohn McDonnell MP – founder member of the Blacklist Support Group (& Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer)\nImran Khan QC – BSG lawyer at Undercover Policing Inquiry\nGail Cartmail – Assistant General Secretary\, UNITE the union\nChris Stephens MP – SNP employment spokesperson \nMore to be confirmed \n\n \nBlacklist Support Group\nbook: https://newint.org/books/new-internationalist/blacklisted-second-edition\nvideo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eNcgrNs6pB8\n\nfacebook: http://www.facebook.com/groups/blacklistSG/\nblog: www.hazards.org/blacklistblog\n\nShare this:FacebookTwitterTumblrEmailMoreLinkedInRedditPinterestPocketPrint

SUMMARY:Activists & The Surveillance State\, Glasgow
DESCRIPTION:Activists vs the surveillance state: Learning from Repression\n \nWhat can activists learn from each other across generations\, communities\, struggles and countries about state security practices\, about the interests that they protect\, and from the resistance of activists and movements being spied upon? \nDrawing from a new collection edited by Aziz Choudry\, with contributions from/on Aotearoa/New Zealand\, Australia\, Britain\, Canada\, South Africa and the US\, in this talk Choudry will explore what experiences of state surveillance\, political policing\, and the criminalisation of activism can tell us about the nature of democracy in liberal democracies – and state power. \nAziz is joined by Eveline Lubbers of the Undercover Research Group\, and ‘Andrea‘\, an activist who was deceived into a relationship by undercover police officer Carlo Neri. \nAndrea will talk about her experience\, the way such relationships were strategically used by the police\, and about the campaign for truth and justice led by women like her. \n \nAziz Choudry is Associate Professor and Canada Research Chair in Social Movement Learning and Knowledge Production in the Department of Integrated Studies in Education\, McGill University. He is also the editor of Just Work? Migrant Workers’ Struggles Today. \nThe event is hosted by the Socialist Theory and Movements Research Network. \nShare this:FacebookTwitterTumblrEmailMoreLinkedInRedditPinterestPocketPrint

SUMMARY:Demo for Andy Coles’ resignation\, Peterborough
DESCRIPTION:Andy Coles then and now \nWhat: Demonstration outside Peterborough City Council meeting calling for former abusive spycop Councillor Andy Coles to resign. \nWhere: Town Hall\, St Peter’s Road\, Peterborough PE1 1YX (rear entrance; the main Bridge Street entrance is not usually used) \nWhen: 6pm\, Wednesday 6 March 2019 \nWhy: Andy Coles deceived a teenager into an intimate relationship when he was an undercover officer. He is a city councillor in Peterborough\, a position unfit for someone who abuses a role of public trust to violate fundamental human rights. \nIn May 2017\, Andy Coles\, Deputy Police & Crime Commissioner for Cambridgeshire and Peterborough City Councillor\, was exposed as a former undercover Special Demonstration Squad officer. It was revealed he had deceived teenager “Jessica” into an intimate relationship\, telling her he was 24 years old\, when he was 32. “Jessica” has said she feels like she was groomed: \n“Although not legally underage\, I feel that my youth and vulnerability were used to target me. I was groomed by someone much older\, and far more experienced… I was manipulated into having a sexual relationship with him. I didn’t even know his real name.” \nIt is entirely inappropriate for someone who has committed these admitted human rights abuses to be in a position of respect and authority. Andy Coles has resigned his post as Deputy Police & Crime Commissioner\, and he must now step down from his post as Councillor as well. \nPrevious demonstrations have seen a broad spectrum of people attending\, and calls for his resignation have attracted cross-party support on the council. \nIt is important that the Andy Coles and the Council see the public outrage at these revelations. Without this\, they may be able to sweep it under the carpet. \nColes is one in an ever increasing line of undercover police revealed to have abused women in this way\, and it is essential that we demand accountability for these actions. \nJoin us outside the next Peterborough Council meeting on Wednesday 6 March at 6pm\, ahead of the council meeting at 7pm. \n\n \nHuman Rights Abuser Andy Coles banner made by Jessica\, Peterborough Town Hall \n\n\n\nShare this:\n\n\nShare this:FacebookTwitterTumblrEmailMoreLinkedInRedditPinterestPocketPrint
