SUMMARY:Demo at Spycops Public Inquiry Hearing
DESCRIPTION:It is over seven years since the undercover policing scandal broke\, creating shock that the police could commit such abuses against social\, animal\, and environmental justice campaigners in our country. \nPublic outrage at the scandals around undercover policing led to the Public Inquiry into Undercover Policing. Three years in\, just ahead of when it was scheduled to publish its final report\, it has yet to begin. Beset by police delaying tactics\, people who have had their lives turned upside down by infiltration are still waiting for answers. We are no nearer to knowing the extent of the ongoing abuse of democracy. \nOn Monday 20 November the Inquiry is holding another preliminary hearing at the Royal Courts of Justice in London. Starting at 10am\, it is scheduled to last three days. It will cover the ability to refer to spent convictions when the inquiry takes evidence\, and the applications for anonymity by former spycops. Somewhat ominously\, it will begin with the new Chair\, Sir John Mitting\, using his first public hearing to give ‘a statement on the future conduct of the Inquiry’. \nIt is people like you\, taking a stand for your right to campaign for positive change without being abused by the state\, that will change history\, making sure these abuses come to light and are prevented from ever happening again. Without public support\, the police may get away with hiding what has happened\, and be able to continue their abuses. \nWe will be outside the Royal Courts of Justice from 9am on the Monday 20 November. \nCome along to the picket and stand with the core participants to support their demands that the Inquiry releases the cover names\, and opens up the files on people who have been spied upon. \nSpread the word with the Facebook event. \nShare this:FacebookTwitterTumblrEmailMoreLinkedInRedditPinterestPocketPrint

SUMMARY:Undercover Policing Inquiry preliminary hearing
DESCRIPTION:Sir John Mitting \nThe Chair of the Undercover Policing Inquiry\, Sir John Mitting\, has received submissions from the non-police\, non-state core participants further to his ‘Minded to’ note on the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (‘the 1974 Act’). \nAs a result the Inquiry will be holding a hearing in relation to the use of evidence of spent convictions and the proposal in the ‘Minded to’ note to seek an exemption from section 4(1) of the 1974 Act. \nIt wil also hear anonymity applications by former members of the Special Demonstration Squad. \nThe hearing will take place on 20-22 November 2017. This is slightly later than had been anticipated and is as a result of additional time being requested by core participants to provide submissions in response to the Chair’s 3 August 2017 ‘Minded to’ note. \nThe hearing was originally scheduled for 1 November\, and its announcement stated \nThe Chairman will use the opportunity offered by his first public hearing on 1 November 2017 to make a statement on the future conduct of the Inquiry. A copy of the statement will be circulated immediately after it has been made\, and posted on the Inquiry’s website. \nThis statement will now be given on 20 November\, apparently as the first thing in the hearing. \nThere is no indication of which specific matters it will concern. \nThe hearing will take place in Court 76 at the Royal Courts of Justice\, The Strand\, London WC2A 2LL \nJoin the demonstration outside from 9-10am. \nShare this:FacebookTwitterTumblrEmailMoreLinkedInRedditPinterestPocketPrint
