SUMMARY:Subversion\, sabotage & spying: Political policing & state racism in the UK
DESCRIPTION:At this two-day conference on Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 April 2016\, an impressive line up of speakers will examine the role and impact of undercover policing and the surveillance of protest groups and ‘suspect communities’. \nAbout the conference \nGovernment policy continues to invent and punish ‘suspect and targeted communities’ and frustrate genuine attempts to hold its agencies to account. \nBuilding on a hugely successful conference in 2015\, this event will examine the history and disastrous impact of the policing of social and justice movements. It will open a dialogue on ‘accountability’ so that a long-awaited ‘momentum for change’ can be driven by those directly affected by disproportionality and discrimination. \nIn light of the upcoming Undercover Policing Inquiry the conference will seek to develop a strategic alliance between those directly affected by undercover policing (so far 170+ non-state individuals have been granted core participant status at the Inquiry)\, civil society and the public so that the Inquiry adopts a broader\, open and more rigorous approach. \nSpeakers* \n\n\n\nBaroness Doreen Lawrence\nNeville Lawrence\n\n\nJohn McDonnell\, MP\nDiane Abbott\, MP\n\n\nGary Younge\, journalist\nBaroness Jenny Jones\, The Green Party\n\n\nImran Khan\, solicitor\nMichael Mansfield QC\n\n\nCourtenay Griffiths QC\nGareth Peirce\, solicitor\n\n\nShamik Dutta\, solicitor\nRosa Curling\, solicitor\n\n\nRob Evans\, journalist\nMarc Wadsworth\, journalist\n\n\nProfessor Mark McGovern\, academic\nProfessor Gus John\, academic & activist\n\n\nPatrick Williams\, academic\nMoazzem Begg\, Cage Prisoners\n\n\nSalma Yaqoob\nPaddy Hill\, Birmingham 6 defendant\n\n\nDeborah Coles\, Inquest\nStafford Scott\, Tottenham Rights\n\n\nSuresh Grover\, The Monitoring Group\nKate Wilson\, activist\n\n\nDave Smith\, Blacklisted trade union group\nPiers Corbyn\, scientist\n\n\nHelen Steel\, activist\nJanet Alder\, justice campaigner\n\n\n\n* bold denotes confirmed \nAbout the conference partners \nThis conference is co-organised by The Monitoring Group and the Centre for Crime and Justice Studies. It is supported by Imran Khan and Partners and Tottenham Rights.
