Spycops In Wales, Cardiff
26th June 2018 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
DATE: Tuesday 26 June 2018, 18:00-20:00
VENUE: Pierhead Building, National Assembly for Wales, Cardiff CF10 4PZ
Women from Wales who have been affected by the spycops scandal will be speaking in Cardiff about their experience, the ongoing public inquiry and the need for greater transparency. Come and hear about how they were targeted by undercover police officers for their involvement in political campaigning, how they resisted and made the police apologise.
Lisa was an active campaigner in many different social and environmental campaigns, including against the arms trade, natural resource exploitation, the nuclear industry and GM crops. She was deceived into a six year relationship by Mark Stone – undercover police officer Mark Kennedy – in the 2000s. Her confrontation and exposure of him in 2010 propelled the scandal into the public consciousness.
Rosa came from a background of animal rights, green, social justice and anti-racist campaigns, and was involved in local campaigns which put people, communities and the environment before profit. She had a nine year relationship with a man she met in the 1990s as activist Jim Sutton, aka Special Demonstration Squad officer Jim Boyling, including having children with him. The Metropolitan police belatedly sacked him for not informing them of the extent of the relationship.
Rosa and Lisa are two of the women who brought the four-year legal case against the Met that culminated in 2015’s extraordinary apology.
Also speaking:
Kim Bryan, an activist who, like Rosa and Lisa, is a core participant at the Undercover Policing Inquiry. She currently works with the Spycops Communications Group analysing and conveying the workings of the Inquiry.
Val Aston of the Network For Police Monitoring.
The event is being held at the Pier Head Building of the National Assembly for Wales, and is sponsored by Bethan Sayed AM.
The event will have speaking in both Welsh and English (translation will be available).
